The Treatment of Infertility

Once the cause of your fertility problems has been diagnosed, your doctor will recommend treatment he or she feels is right for you. However, the decision to pursue treatment is a very personal one; some couples may seek alternative ways of becoming parents, such as adoption.

Infertility Medications— Infertility medications stimulate the development and release of eggs from your ovaries.

In Vitro Fertilization Part 1—Ovulation Induction—The purpose of ovulation induction is to produce multiple eggs for the in vitro fertilization procedure.

In Vitro Fertilization Part 2—Egg Retrieval, Fertilization, and Transfer—Egg Retrieval, Fertilization, and Transfer page>— Infertility treatment in which a woman’s eggs are retrieved from her ovaries, fertilized with sperm, with the resulting embryos transferred back into her uterine cavity.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)—Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is an infertility treatment in which sperm are placed into your uterine cavity through a catheter to help it reach the egg.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)—Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an infertility treatment in which one sperm is injected directly into an egg.

Luteal Support Medications—Luteal support medications help maintain progesterone levels that prepare your uterine lining (endometrium) to support the implantation and growth of the developing embryo.
